ABSTRACT

Parents are often told that young children need their parents to be firm and consistent. But with many children, particularly those with developmental delays in attention, language and play skills, trying to be firm and consistent isn't enough. If it seems to the parent that the child is always into trouble and that there are frequent unrewarding battles for control, parents can often feel worn out, exasperated and resentful. Children need attention from their parents. They need to know that their parents are interested in them and will help out when needed. By giving full positive attention to their children, even for short periods parents show their children that they care for and respect them. Children who are not sure about whether their parents have positive feelings for them can also become 'attention-seeking'. Some teenagers are more challenging to parent than other teenagers.
