ABSTRACT

Children can often be helped a great deal when adults are able to recognise and acknowledge intense emotions such as anger, rage, fear, terror, hatred, jealousy, shame, sadness, guilt, boredom, disappointment, frustration, tiredness and longing. Children also need to know that Professionals also have feelings about things that happen. Make sure that Professionals' children have regular periods of quiet time to play together when there is no one else around. Help children to learn how to solve their own disputes fairly and take an interest in their problem-solving attempts. Each conflict can be an opportunity to practise some listening and problem-solving skills. Problem-solving in relationships can be learned. It is based on learning respect for others and on an ability to listen carefully.
