ABSTRACT

Some children are much harder to parent than others. They test the extreme limits of a parent's patience. The children can appear insensitive to others, self-centred, provocative and sometimes aggressive. Temperamentally difficult children are undoubtedly exhausting to parent. Temperamentally challenging children need extra help from parents in order to learn how to make positive relationships with others and how to behave in socially acceptable ways. Some children need very firm consistent and clearly stated rules which are repeated and followed through on again and again as long as is necessary. Practice in negotiation of problems with discussion Impulsive difficult children needs practice in negotiating agreements to conflicts using reason and words. Self-talk and practice with relaxation skills can be very helpful if a child is feeling anxious about doing something.
