ABSTRACT

The terms 'autism', 'autistic spectrum disorder', or 'Aspergers Syndrome', tend to be used when a child appears to be having average difficulties in understanding the social world of relationships with other people. Social relationships: Children with autism commonly appear less interested in others. Forming friendships is hard for them though they may get on well with, and show great affection towards, one or two trusted and familiar children or adults. Some children in addition to their difficulties have areas of special talents in drawing, music or maths. The difficulties usually become apparent before the child is three years old and boys are affected much more commonly. Encourage social interaction and communication skills All children communicate, the trick is to work out what Professionals' child does currently understand, and how they communicate in order to build on these skills. Gestures, photos and games can all nurture their child's interest in communicating with professionals.
