ABSTRACT

Most children become dry and clean during the day in their second or third year with some occasional accidents. Most children stop needing nappies during their third or fourth year. Most become dry at night before the end of the fifth year. In the period before, during and after separation and divorce adults and children feel many mixed and confusing emotions. Children need support in acknowledging these emotions. Parents can help children by giving them an opportunity to express their views and feelings about what is happening and about their wishes. But parents should make sure that the child understands that the responsibility for the break up is theirs and only theirs. Children need to know that they have two parents who love them and will continue to care for them whatever happens. Soiling sometimes occurs because a child has become seriously constipated.
