ABSTRACT

Trauma reactions are normally found after situations in which a person has felt extremely frightened because the things that were happening to them were terrifying and seemed to be seriously out of control. Trauma can also affect whole communities following events such as earthquakes, floods and war. One of the key elements that determine whether a person experiences long-term trauma effects is whether they felt at the time that there were other reliable people that they could turn to for assistance. There is quite a lot of evidence to suggest that children who were exposed to early trauma or early stressful events are more vulnerable to stronger reactions if they experience other traumas or significant stresses later in life.
