ABSTRACT

Very few children indeed get additional one to one help in school and very few of these get one to one help from a qualified teacher. All schools are required to have a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and a Register of children with special needs. The statement is a legal document that should specify in detail what extra help will be provided for the child. A statutory assessment is likely to be appropriate if the child is thought to need very high levels of special support. Parents should be aware however that most Education Authorities are trying to provide for the majority of children under Action and Action Plus. There are some clear rules that explain what parents and professionals need to do in order to request extra help for a child in school or nursery. The rules also determine which children get extra help and what sort of help they can get.
