ABSTRACT

The relationship between children and adults has changed a lot in the last decades. Many parents often feel confused about what is needed from them. But there is clear psychological research to show that children whatever their age, sex, temperament or skills, need certain things from their parents if they are to grow up to be reasonably confident and happy adults. Children need different things from their parents at different times. Whether child is a toddler or a teenager, he or she will sometimes behave like an older child and sometimes like a younger child. These changing needs of the child call on parents to be flexible and patient. A parent's main goal is therefore to help their child to gradually but steadily develop the skills that allow him or her to take on more of the responsibilities associated with adulthood.
