ABSTRACT

About this life skill This life skill means that when you know you have triggered a primitive sense of threat (fear, anxiety, anger), which is adversely affecting your capacity to think well, you are able to find effective ways to regulate your emotions. With the accompanying physiological arousal, no one can stop themselves getting stressed. That’s not the point. It’s a survival instinct all mammals have. The point is that if someone has this life skill, they can effectively bring themselves down to a state of calm. The skill also involves knowing when you need someone to help you to do this. This means the ability to seek solace, advice and comfort from another person when bad things happen, rather than reaching for a cigarette, alcoholic drink, some food, going to bed, running away or fighting (verbally or physically) to stop the pain.
