ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the three main themes: What is mental health and mental illness; What helps and what does not; and Why is mental health important. Each session should start with a reminder of the ground rules. A variety of activities accompany the lesson plans along with activity pages for children to complete. The aims and objectives apply to the programme and as someone modify the sessions to meet the needs of the young people, the aims and objectives will change accordingly. While there are many similarities between establishments, there are also particular considerations and therefore, additional aims and objectives could be incorporated. Alternatively, some could be deleted or amended accordingly as the teacher deems appropriate. Examples of aims and objectives include: To educate against discrimination and prejudice; and To empower children to make informed choices.
