ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to support vulnerable pupils by offering suggestions to ensure a stress free and pleasurable transition at a strategic whole-school level and strategies for encouraging team work, participation and raising self-esteem within the classroom. It offers a programme to support pupils at an individual or group level to enable them to develop skills that will help them both in school and when they leave and move to the work place or further education. The book provides the PowerPoint presentation, complete with facilitator notes which can be used as a staff development opportunity. It outlines the implementation of the programme and the ways it can be managed within the school setting. The book also offers advice and guidance for setting up whole-school systems and procedures at transition as well as suggestions for classroom strategies to support interaction and communication.
