ABSTRACT

Children who are unhappy at school often become reluctant attendees. If there is any change in patterns of attendance or lateness then this should be quickly identified through regular attendance checks either by the form tutor or the person responsible for monitoring attendance in school. Where a pupil is emotionally or motivationally insecure, their willingness to participate in lessons and engage with their learning will be impaired. For those pupils who have less developed strategies for accessing the curriculum, they then too may underachieve. Pupils who are struggling with transition often display behaviours relating to low self-esteem, poor confidence and self-image. Pupils may become withdrawn, appear to have few friends, they may appear to have difficulties maintaining friendships and are frequently involved in arguments or confrontations with their peers. The key person with responsibility for the pupil will often be the person who is compiling and monitoring the antecedent, behaviour, consequences chart.
