ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the majority position, which is that men prefer not to hold too many conversations and if they do, they keep them short. Women generally find holding conversations easier and seek out situations where they can talk to people. However, men mainly use conversations for passing information and can find talking on the phone much harder. In some types of dementia, perhaps the earliest symptom and one which is often missed is that the person starts to find some aspects of conversation difficult. Men tend to become better at jobs that don't require too many conversations - in IT or as service engineers. Men and women have different preferences when it comes to communication and there are physiological reasons why this is the case. All adults really need to do communicatively is sit back and enjoy the progress into easier interpretation and information-giving.
