ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a narrative intervention programme to enhance the understanding and facilitating the expression of narratives or stories in students with varied speech, language and communication needs in the later primary years and in secondary schools. It details the eighth session of the programme. This session provides some character descriptions from a range of publications which facilitators can read to students. They may decide to read them all or select a few and spend longer discussing them in more detail. Students should be encouraged to critically evaluate each description and comment on how effective and evocative each characterisation is. Members of the group may not always be familiar with or understand some of the new vocabulary or phrases. It is important that as many news words as possible are explained and discussed so that students have a good understanding of the descriptions used.
