ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a narrative intervention programme to enhance the understanding and facilitating the expression of narratives or stories in students with varied speech, language and communication needs in the later primary years and in secondary schools. It details the tenth session of the programme. This session aims to revise and recap the importance of characterisation in a story and revisit the three parts that make up the beginning of a story: Setting = character, time, place. It shares character profile and biographical story on a specific character from a chosen subject of the curriculum. The session provides some time and place descriptions from a range of publications which can be read to the students. Facilitator might decide to read them all, or to choose some of their favourites and go into them in more detail. Students should be encouraged to critically evaluate each description and comment on how effective and evocative each description is.
