ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a narrative intervention programme to enhance the understanding and facilitating the expression of narratives or stories in students with varied speech, language and communication needs in the later primary years and in secondary schools. It details the session twelve of the programme. This session provides a summary of the literary devices. Facilitator needs to use the story planner to help structure the story. They need to make sure their story has a beginning, middle and end. They also need to use humour in their stories. Facilitator then introduce the characters and provide detailed information about them. Students should now be able to provide exciting plots, in addition to having detailed characterisations and time and place information. Facilitator need to encourage them to evaluate their storytelling skills. This may also be a good time for them to revisit the aims and targets that they set at the start of the programme.
