ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a narrative intervention programme to enhance the understanding and facilitating the expression of narratives or stories in students with varied speech, language and communication needs in the later primary years and in secondary schools. It details the first session of the programme. Therapists encourage students to generate a set of group rules to follow during the sessions. This facilitates the smooth and successful running of the group and ensures that each member is an active participant in the group, has been a part of selling up the group rules and has agreed to follow the rules. The rules should be written on a flipchart or whiteboard or large piece of paper and brought by the facilitator to each session. Suggested rules that assist in the smooth running of the sessions include: attendance at all sessions, punctuality, excellent affection and concentration throughout the sessions, active listening to facilitator and each group member, and so on.
