ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a narrative intervention programme to enhance the understanding and facilitating the expression of narratives or stories in students with varied speech, language and communication needs in the later primary years and in secondary schools. It details the fifth session of the programme. The chapter provides the students with an overview of the story planner. Facilitator should photocopy a copy of the story planner for each student. They need to show them the planner and explain to them how the three basic elements of beginning, middle and end can be expanded into further elements. The beginning of a story sets the scene for the events that will take place in the middle of the story. It provides details of the characters, time and place of the story, but also prepares the listener or reader for the events that will take place in the next section. The middle part of a story could include more than one episode.
