Eleven common parenting perils Childhood is such a brief interval in the human lifespan. We like to think of it as a time free from worries, pressures and deadlines. In reality, though, many children face upheavals and difficult life events in the course of their childhood. How well they get through them often depends on the support they receive from their families. Separation rates high on the list of stressful life events, not far below the death of a family member. Children need to be supported through separation, and every attempt should be made to avoid either directly or indirectly shouldering them with ‘adult’ worries or responsibilities.
