ABSTRACT
Chapter 4 outlines a history of changing practices and technology that have been used to portray the Reef to the world. Early Reef visitors struggled to effectively share all that they experienced with others, but through the twentieth century the development of sophisticated colour, underwater and motion photography surpassed even the immediate experiences of being at the Reef. These representations shape how people understand the region and are critical to its World Heritage status.
