ABSTRACT
Chapter 17 interrogates an extensive range of research evidence for the ‘ingredient x’ that might explain the success of talk-rich pedagogical interventions like the author’s approach to dialogic teaching, as described in Chapter 16 and trialled by the Education Endowment Foundation. It itemises a range of factors, giving particular attention to what discourse analysts call the ‘third turn’.
