ABSTRACT

This chapter purposes to help us as a school board member understand the importance of using our governance role toward difference making. Its objective helps to develop and embrace the specific skillsets needed to best deploy difference making in the community we love. The general strategy is to find common ground with others on our team. One key is listening to one another, ensuring everyone's perspective is heard. There are likely those in the room who do not have their own emotions tied up in a decision, who are better equipped to study alternative courses of action in a neutral manner. It is important to rely upon one another's wisdom and perspective, and doing so oftentimes results in discussions that are more toned down, with everyone being able to find a common footing. One key to working together well is to understand what each wants individually and affirming these desires.
