ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 introduces the power and promise for psychoeducational groups to guide group leaders and to provide them with tools to capitalize on the benefits these groups can provide. Discussed are the advantages and disadvantages for these groups, how they are defined to balance the cognitive and affective aspects, descriptions for the categories and variety, and some commonly held myths and misunderstandings. Central to the understanding of psychoeducational groups is the Knowledge, Art, Science, Skills, and Techniques (KASST) model that is described and is intended to guide the reader in their development as a group leader.
