ABSTRACT

There is increasing use of psychoeducational groups for those with medical illnesses, emotional disturbances, and other conditions. These groups are found to be helpful to promote healing and adjustments needed for both the client and their caretakers. Learning the etiology, diagnosis and prognosis of the illness or condition, as well as attending to the accompanying emotional component can assist in developing coping skills, reducing worry and anxiety, and in establishing realistic expectations for recovery and other positive outcomes. Information presented in Chapter 14 includes a general process and procedure for planning, the importance to attending to important member factors such as their emotional intensity, expectations for some group members’ attitudes and behaviors, and guidelines for facilitating a single session groups and for a multisession group.
