ABSTRACT

The ethical codes of professional mental health organizations set the standards for psychoeducational group leaders, and these are presented in Chapter 9. It is not necessary that leaders be a part of the organization in order to use their codes for ethical behavior, as all of them seem to be similar in important ways. Standards held in common are: protection to ensure that no harm is being done, that the group leader has the proper training and is truthful in his/her presentation of credentials, the extent of confidentiality and privacy, reporting an documentation, and other such matters. In addition to the ethical guidelines for psychoeducational group leaders, there are federal and state laws that are important for safe and effective practice. Presented is an overview of some federal laws. States have different sets of laws and readers are encouraged to consult those relevant to their state(s) where they practice. Ethical decision models, including a process for making needed ethical decisions during a group session, are presented.
