ABSTRACT

The opening chapter of the book provides general information about assessment, evaluation, and literacy development. It offers definitions of assessment and evaluation, as well as information about the essential components of a comprehensive assessment plan for classroom or district use. It provides readers information about formative and summative assessment data and some of the factors teachers should consider when making decisions about which assessments to use. The chapter also offers an overview of the developmental stages of reading and literacy development, which can be used to guide and inform assessment decisions by providing a framework of literacy skills to be assessed over time.
