ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, the focus shifts to comprehension, cognitive strategies, vocabulary, and affective dimensions of reading. The chapter provides detailed information about the skills and strategies that students employ as they work to construct knowledge while reading, with both narrative and expository or informational text. It also offers recommendations for assessing students’ reading comprehension using formal and informal assessment tools. In addition, the chapter addresses the important topics of metacognition and learning strategies, explaining how these skills enable students to read flexibly and strategically while monitoring comprehension. Further, it includes information about ways that vocabulary and morphological knowledge contribute to comprehension and ways that teachers can assess these essential skills. Finally, the chapter suggests methods of assessing the affective dimensions of reading, such as motivation and engagement.
