ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 lays out the psychological and behavioural barriers to environmental literacy, while drawing on a growing literature around the obstacles that are pulling against a necessary transformation to a low-carbon future in particular. Media literacy programmes have much to learn from these energy debates, while also exemplifying the ongoing tensions between so-called first wave environmentalism and apparently more critical second wave scholarship, using the opening episode of the Netflix series Ozark as an illustration. Developing new creative imaginaries across all media formats are badly needed to speak to a range of complex environmental debates. As constantly illustrated throughout this volume, indirect and often allusive environmental references can be more engaging, even insightful, compared with more direct and preachy audio-visual narrative formats.
