ABSTRACT

Schools throughout the country are often a few steps behind technology compared with the business world. This is not a fault of the people or the schools. The Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL) standards do not dictate how educational leaders must engage and communicate, but it is imperative for school leaders to reflect upon strategies to communicate and communicate well with their school's community. As educators the authors have the enormous opportunity and greater responsibility to model appropriate use of social media within their school community. The use of social media is a blank canvas for sharing the day-to-day life of a school. The 7 Steps are a plan to get the reader started that is strategic in making a successful communication plan using social media: Connecting Your Vision and Mission to a Social Media Purpose; Hashtag It; Traditional Methods that Build a Social Media Following; Making It Happen; Will Anyone Follow Me?; Is It Working; and What's Next?.
