ABSTRACT

This chapter contains ideas and suggestions based on authors' experiences using social media within their schools. They categorize the purpose or types of tweets to hook their followers into engaging bursts of information. Information is powerful in so many ways, and providing that avenue for parents can only help to enhance a child's experience in school by strengthening the home to school connection. There is no shortage of informational topics to share on Twitter in any school. Each year, the Howard County Public Library encourages elementary school children to engage in the Rube Goldberg Challenge where they have to design a machine or system to solve a problem. Twitter and Facebook give schools opportunities to gather feedback directly. Some parents and guardians will not Like or Follow on social media because they don't understand privacy settings. By following a person on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, parents are not giving up any of their privacy.
