ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with an investigation of three models of schooling: The Mississippi Freedom Schools and their more recent incarnations, the Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools, and the UK-based Black Supplementary Schools. These shed light on notions of freedom to and freedom from, but also provide clear examples of how curriculum, pedagogies, structures and processes can be explicitly developed to advance a social justice agenda. The chapter also presents Pride School Atlanta, a controversial and radical new private school which strives to offer LGBTQ affirming education for all students who want to attend. By using a different set of values to underpin the school, Pride School Atlanta is able to offer students a freedom from many of the things that students found to be constraining, oppressive or challenging within other schools. These schools aim to build self-esteem, self-confidence and strong identities amongst students.
