ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the challenges that PhD students may encounter and ways of responding to these in the new contexts in which they find themselves. Doing advanced research and writing a thesis or dissertation whether at master’s or doctoral level is an enormous undertaking. More and more frequently, the language of research, writing, and even everyday communication in the laboratory or library is English. The internationalisation of the research world has encouraged the dominance of English as the international language of research. Junior researchers whether native or non-native speakers can all benefit from more explicit research communication induction while the narrowly English proficient-Senior Researcher may be struggling with publication and communication in English. K. Cadman points out that some international doctoral students may initially be uncomfortable to find that in Western research contexts, they are expected to take responsibility for directing their own learning.
