ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 reviews some key terms in the definitions of words, lexical diversity, lexical sophistication, and lexical depth. Current approaches to vocabulary instruction are also considered. The chapter traces the development of word knowledge from Level 3 through Level 5 in the IEP, focusing on lexical sophistication. The chapter also considers how the IEP implemented instruction in online tutors and in teacher-led classroom practice. The chapter provides frequency lists of vocabulary used by learners at Levels 3, 4, and 5 and details of calculating a method to calculate a normalized frequency per million of each list.
