ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 reviews basic clause-level research in the development of grammatical functors in the Intensive English Program. The issues of the grain size at which errors and omissions are included in development suggests that first language influences development of functors in spoken language, contrary to some widely held views. In addition, the development of syntactic complexity in the written output of the learners is considered from the point of view of current formal theories of language and verb selection. The chapter also reviews MA students’ thesis projects and intervention with an online cognitive tutor.
