ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 reviews various approaches to second language writing, from a focus on the reader/writer relationship to issues in contrastive rhetoric. In addition, the automatic measurement of syntactic complexity using computers is considered. A small sample of essays is analyzed from the points of view of lexical diversity, lexical sophistication, and automated syntactic complexity measures. These computer-generated ratings are compared with an average of three human rater scores. In addition, the essays are considered from a qualitative point of view. Full learner texts are provided in the Appendices.
