This short poem is the most ambitious and most resolved of the meteorological lyrics that S. attempted between October 1821 and March 1822, which also include Rough wind that moanest loud (Longman v, no. 422) and The rude wind is singing (Longman vi, no. 438). The themes of Autumn are also in keeping with speeches in, and related to, Hellas, for example:
