Meditation has become recognised for its healing qualities, especially as it has relatively few, if any, side-effects. It is gaining respect among scientists because the impact of its positive effects can now be measured using scientific methods and it is likely that there will be continued interest and research into the practice of meditation over the next few years, finally bringing it firmly into the secular domain. It is widely accepted by the medical profession that the breathing process is directly linked to the brain and central nervous system and is one of the most vital processes in the body system. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a combination of 'non-directive' meditation and developed awareness of simple everyday things such as body sensations when showering, eating, walking, therefore being more fully present in the moment. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is the combination of mindfulness and meditation with cognitive therapy.
