ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses in broad terms, the nature of therapeutic interventions, and highlights the specific methods which can be used where the client is experiencing confusion or memory loss. The emotional consequences of abuse are likely to be varied in terms both of nature and severity. It is often the case that people suffering from confusion are construed as totally unable to benefit from counselling-based approaches. Basically, validation therapy assumes that many adults are, for various reasons, unable to resolve their conflicts, which leads to despair, isolation and discontent. Resolution therapy is specifically designed for use in counselling clients experiencing an organic dementia, but can also be used in cases of pseudo-dementia. Group based interventions have several advantages over direct ‘one to one’ work. Groups may be structured in terms of following a specific agenda or program and involve the incorporation of the therapist or facilitator.
