ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an initial summary regarding the basic principles which govern behavior, and then goes on to offer several explanations or reasons why abuse occurs, based upon these principles. There are circumstances, where one’s motivation can be diminished in spite of the need to meet one’s objectives. Relationships continually undergo changes, partly as a product of people’s development and partly as a response to major events. Stress is widely recognised as being both a fundamental feature within many caregiving relationships and a major contribution to a caregiver’s ill-health. Many individuals are likely to carry with them a variety of personal problems in their lives. Undoubtedly, there are circumstances within the family or social context where the function of abuse is simply related to a person’s desire for material or personal gain. The most salient form of abuse in such circumstances is financial abuse.
