ABSTRACT

Depending on the particular topic, students may also need some whole-group prompting to "jog their memories" regarding previously learned information. It may be helpful to post a "key word" bank (without defining the words) to help activate prior knowledge. This task works best in pairs and therefore the teacher will want to pay careful attention to how students are grouped and may need to provide lessons beforehand on how to work together productively. The teacher will want to review the graphic organizer at the beginning of the unit to determine what students do and do not know, and what misconceptions there are, in order to plan either the lesson or unit. Teachers should also check in with students periodically throughout the learning to ensure that they are updating their charts and to make sure any misconceptions have been corrected and new learning is being added.
