ABSTRACT

Students can be partnered with other students to provide more support, though it's recommended that students are not paired with someone significantly above or below their current level, as that might lead to one student doing all the work. For Thomas, Lula notices all his incorrect attempts start with the letter D, even though he was given the letter B. She realizes Thomas is having difficulty distinguishing the "buh" sound from the "duh" sound, and will need to work with him on that. Lula decides that next time she will scaffold the learning so that some students are given a second letter to search for after they find enough words that start with their first letter. She will also schedule the next session during a time when one or two of the fifth grade volunteers who come to her class once a week can be there to work one-on-one with Stephen.
