ABSTRACT

The 3-2-1 is a versatile formative assessment that works best when used after students have learned new information. The teacher should examine common themes about the new things learned that day. If a majority of the students does not describe important takeaways from the lesson, the teacher may want to review them with the whole class. If there are common questions, the teacher will want to address them with the whole class. Otherwise, the teacher will want to follow up with individual students regarding their questions. Lastly, the teacher will want to use the information about what students enjoyed in order to plan upcoming instruction. Students who are not strong writers can complete their 3-2-1 orally. Younger students might be asked only one or two of the prompts, or asked to give fewer examples of things they learned and questions they still have.
