ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a very simple formative assessment task that works best after a chunk of learning, such as at the end of the teacher explanation portion of the lesson or the end of the lesson itself. In addition to formatively assessing what students know, it can also be used to facilitate classroom discussion. The task can either facilitate conversations for the whole group or in small groups. The teacher determines which student will go first and gives that student the direction to read his or her question or comment. The second student then has two different ways to respond: respond to the first person's statement or question; or share her or his own question or statement. The third person to go can similarly either respond to either of the first two people's questions/statements or share his or her own question/statement.
