ABSTRACT

The teacher gives students a sample problem completed by an example student with a common error. In journals or on a half-sheet of paper, ask students to identify the error and explain to the example student in a sentence or a paragraph how to fix it. This task can be used for any cognitive category from Remember to Evaluate, but is itself at the Evaluate level. Once students become used to this kind of exercise, the teacher can invite students to make their own Sample Student Scenario, therefore raising it to the Create level. The teacher can use the information to quickly see who does and does not understand the concepts being studied in order to act upon that information. For instance, the teacher could easily identify which students understand the basic concepts and know how to justify their thinking.
