ABSTRACT

All the tactile learners in class will love being able to do a very hands-on formative assessment. Teachers can use inexpensive modeling dough to have students create a sculpture of the main idea of the topic. The teacher can have students demonstrate their knowledge of various cultures, or elements of stories read in the world language being studied. Students can sculpt how songs make them feel, instruments in various categories, and notes from what they consider the "most challenging" section of their performed music. Sculpture certainly is a major part of the Visual Arts, so it works very naturally in this subject area. Students can sculpt their understanding of shapes, lines, etc., both in general and in specific works of art. Types of exercises to improve health, nutritious meals, and bodily systems can all be sculpted. Students can sculpt principles of digital citizenship, steps in the inquiry process, or their main understandings after conducting research on a topic.
