ABSTRACT
An analysis of the trade in agricultural commodities prior to the transport revolution is an essential prerequisite to an assessment of its significance. This first section of the book will consider relationships between demand and supply of foodstuffs, between communications networks and the organization of commerce mainly in the first half of the nineteenth century. The basic question to be considered is that of the effectiveness of the prevailing methods of food production and distribution.
