ABSTRACT
Ideas come from many sources, and part of any research design is translating those ideas into reliable and valid ways of measuring them. This chapter discusses how to write a good literature review, especially in the context of using theory to guide research. It also discusses the ethical issues involved in doing research. The chapter provides some strategies that can be used to develop a research agenda that is meaningful and focused and that can help in creating a successful research design. Theories are an important source of research ideas; they typically underlie high-quality research. If a theory is used to generate research ideas about certain behaviors and attitudes, then researchers will use deductive reasoning. The chapter helps researchers to search for topics in the library and in computer databases, write a coherent and focused review of the research literature, and note the ethical concerns various kinds of research topics might raise.
