ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the circumstances that lead to a placement will inevitably colour foster carers' preparation and planning, but they should not compromise the quality of information that the foster carers receive and the support systems that are put in place. Carers should always be clear of the child's history, including past behaviours, particularly if the behaviours led to a placement breakdown at some point. In determining whether to be concerned about the child's mental health, written or verbal information from important adults who know the child should ideally be complemented by observations and direct evidence from the child themselves. Some tips relate to all children, it predominantly focuses on specific issues related to children in foster care. The chapter provides a case study about Martin, who is 15 years old and he has just come into foster care after an acrimonious two years of intermittently running away from his family, living on the streets or on older friends' sofas.
