ABSTRACT

Over the years I have often received a fair bit of ribbing from colleagues who labour under the delusion that PE is not important and it doesn't take a great deal of brains to succeed at it. What I have discovered, however, is that PE can be used to enhance and reinforce other subject areas whereas the reverse is not always true. I have often tried to include opportunities for basic numeracy and literacy skills in PE lessons. Mathematics is one area where PE can be of great help, from simple counting and score keeping to ready reckoning and mental arithmetic as well as data handling and simple statistical data gathering.
