ABSTRACT

There have been enormous advances in the use of computer technology to support

people to communicate. Communication aids that use any form of computer

technology are defined as low mid and high-tech aids. There is not always a

consensus on the definition of these categories; however, they are all electronic

and use computer technology. Generally, the more technologically advanced an

aid is, the higher the category is. Low-tech aids include simple switches such as

BIGmack™ and Gotalk4™ which play pre-recorded or synthesised verbal messages

which are accessed by pressing a button or symbol. More high-tech options such

as VOCAs (voice output communication aids) often require more input or allow the

user to navigate more pages, offering increased choice. Higher-tech products can be

programmed to grow and develop to meet individual needs.
